Maborosi

I had never heard of this band before, so only by coincidence I got the luck to listen to this upcoming Danish band. They played a double act together with Maria Viskonti at one of the Club Yeah Yeah events at Rust, and Maria had recommented me to give this band a listen.
So I did, as I already had an appointment with Maria to cover her concert this night (see photos of Maria Viskonti's set here)

I was surprised to hear a wellplaying band of four young men, hardly born when the bands they are inspired of, made their everlasting masterpieces.
Maborosi sounds very much like one of the great 1960's bands with sophisticated songs containing many of the same qualities, which made the Beatles' songs immortal. Very melodical, laid-back sound and you can hear The Smiths, John Sebastian (The Loving Spoonful) in their tunes, but also the melancoly of Blur and Suede in singer Tobias Buch's vocals.

The press material speaks about comparisons with early 70's Bowie and Beach Boys, but for me there are more John Lennon in the songs. The intro song, Falling From The Stars reminds me of Jelous Guy, and Mayumi and It's Over are very Beatles-like.
I would not hesitate to compare Tobias Buch with two great Danish male singers: Bjørn Fjæstad (Baal) and former Fielfraz singer, Claus Hempler.

Only negative thing about Maborosi is their band name. If I were their manager, I would suggest them to take an easier-to-remember band name. Marobosi is hard to pronounce, difficult to spell and impossible to remember!

Anyway, Maborosi has not released any album yet, - only a three song demo-cd containing Slow Dance / Crazy Blue / Hollow Man. I didn't hear the demo untill after I had attended their live performance at Rust. But after having heard the excellently produced demo, I can say that we really have to look foreward to their studio material. They are even better in the studio than on stage. Especially the song Crazy Blue, deserves to be a P3-radio favorite! An obvious option for their first single.
