First
time I met Tanja was at the Randi Laubek concert
in Tivoli Gardens in June 2003 (see the pictures here).
She contacted me after the show, as her husbond, Thorbjörn Appehl,
played the bass in Randi's backing band. I
didn't know that Tanja created music on her own, until she sent
me a demo of four of her songs. She wanted me to make a promotional photo series
of her to follow the demo. I have listened to hundreds, not to say thousands,
of demos by various bands and artists, but Tanja's demo completely
knocked me out: It's the most fascinating demo I've ever listened to. If you combine
the early work of Joni Mitchell with a laid-back Randi Laubek,
you'll get an idea of the qualities in the music of this gifted artist. With
the help of Morten Woods, Gustaf Ljunggren and Thorbjörn
Appehl, Tanja has made a little masterpiece contaning the
song titles: Transfer, Make It Good, Walk Straight
Home and Worth It.
We spent a cosy day of
photo shooting in the courtyard of Tanja's home in Østerbro
and in an empty office in the neighbourhood. Six hours all in all. Tanja
appeared as soft, relaxed and beautiful as the music she creates. Below some
of the pictures can be viewed. Enjoy and watch out for this upcoming talent. Tanja
Appehl plans to release her debut album at the end of this year. Never
before I've been so convinced that here we have an artist facing a great future
at the Danish music scene. Read more about this exciting upcoming talent at www.tanjaappehl.dk.
